As you can see, I get hearts using SyncTerm when typing in Southern Amis. I get them as the system does word wraps and backspacing.

Building from source gets you a fixed version. You can also get the 1.2 version of SyncTerm from a link at the bottom of the main page. The Windows one seems to work great and gets rid of the hearts. The Mac one, though, flashes all the time for me, like it's trying to give me seizures. I finally got it compiled from source, though, and both the hearts and the flashing are gone.
EDIT: Ooops. Well I just called a BBS and while it was doing the animated cursor thing, it flashed a few times. At least it's nowhere near as bad as it was before.
Oops again. Now I see what you mean about it needing to force close when you disconnect.
SyncTerm for MacOS
You ever have those moments where you have done something so much in routine that you dont even recall doing it? Well I have completely blocked out the hearts from SyncTerm that I really didn't see it until testing it today.. Its there in the message base, same as everyone else and on every Atascii BBS... I do have a version of SyncTerm for the MAC that I compiled which does not have the hearts but has a defect when the connection is not complete, I need to force quit SyncTerm but it does not have the hearts...
I use Mac version 1.1 and the hearts show up. I dont pay it much attention but it does happen on my 1.1 version.
My windows version does that, my linux version doesn't. The hearts don't show up in a posted message though, so I just live with it.
It's not just Southernamis, BTW - SyncTerm does it on any 8bit Atari BBS that I'm on with ATASCII set....
I use the Mac Version 1.1 and have never seen hearts like that.. Ill drop a video shortly…
I've got SyncTerm set to "raw" here and honestly, that doesn't seem to make any difference...
Is the profile in syncterm set up for RAW or telnet? If telnet, change to RAW.
I'm told that the newer version (still not released officially yet?) corrects this...
