A +++ (firmware/software) solution was needed in part because not all computers back then implemented the full RS232 Standard. So, doing things like flashing the DTR pin on/off would not work, for example. Pictured below is the RS232 connector for the Atari 8 bit. Note the missing (unimplemented) pins in the connector.
